BECOMING A FOSTER PARENT
Life-Center responds to an inquiry from foster applicant by contacting the candidates by phone to arrange a preliminary interview. At the preliminary interview, the Director or designate completes the information section regarding fostering and what it requires. Foster parent application will be given to the applicant.
The Director or designate reviews the M.C. S.S and M.C.Y.S. requirements with all potential applicants and invites them for a second interview if they are willing to continue with the process
A second interview is held with any potential foster parents who are qualified to meet the criteria set out by M.C. S.S and M.C.Y.S. and Life-Center.
A basic questionnaire for the home study shall be given to the applicant.
After the second interview, the applicants shall submit the following documents:

Life-Center conducts thorough assessments of every foster parent and ensures that the residential setting to be used meets the criteria set by the Ministry of Children and Youth Services in order to prevent the re-occurrence of the circumstances that lead a child to the care of society’s protection and to promote healthy development of every foster child.
Foster Homes Assessment Include the following:
Life-Center Director or Resource Worker shall assess each home using a check list to assist each home to meet the necessary requirements and Ministry regulations during quarterly reviews and annual assessments.

- At least three reference letters for an applicant and five references for a joint applicant (Telephone references may be accepted)
- A written medical report completed by a physician or nurse practitioner
- A Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check for all persons over the age of 18 living in the home
- CAS Record Check
- Training in standard first aid, including infant and child CPR
- PRIDE training
Acceptable Applicant must:
- Be 18 years of age or older.
- Have minimum of one year experience in fostering, parenting skills or social services field.
- Have an appropriate dwelling place – apartment is not allowed.
- His/her name must not be listed in child abuse registry.
- Be available for an orientation session with their own children.
- Have adequate language and communication skills to meet the needs of the child.
- Be willing to learn new skills.
- Be willing to cooperate with other professionals.
- Offer a reasonable commitment to a child for the duration of his/her stay in care.
- Be able to ensure and provide the child with appropriate development in a safe environment.

Foster Homes Assessment Include the following:
- Smoke detectors on each floor and in each foster child/s bed room.
- Carbon Monoxide detector on each floor.
- Each foster child has a bed and a dresser with a minimum of 3 drawers
- Fire Extinguisher, fire escape plan accessible to resident (Fire drill will be review during quarterly and annual review by Life-Center Resource Worker or Director.
- First Aid Kit accessible in the home and all cleaning supplies and medication lucked up
- Room accommodates 55 square feet per child fifteen (15) years and under. Seventy five (75) square feet for 16 years and over.
- Life-Center Policies and Procedure manuals available in the home.
- Residents file and confidential documents are locked up.
- Advocacy and Ombudsmen information posted for the resident.
